Byatt publicó por primera vez en 1964 y a lo largo de su trayectoria escribió tanto novela como ensayo y crítica. Entre sus libros destacan Posesión ( Premio Booker 1990), El libro negro de los cuentos, La virgen del jardín, Naturaleza muerta, La Torre de Babel y El libro de los niños (finalista del Premio Booker en 2009).

Byatt’s publisher, Chatto & Windus, says that the author died “peacefully at home surrounded by close family.” Byatt wrote two dozen novels, starting with “The Shadow of the Sun” in 1964.

Desde 1990 A.S. Byatt fue Dama del Imperio Británico y Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de Francia. Ese mismo año su novela Posesión fue galardonada con el Booker Prize y el lrish Times/Aer Lingus Literature Prize, el más prestigioso premio irlandés a la mejor novela internacional del año.
