En ocasiones transcrito al español como Mahmoud Darwix, en otros idiomas como Mahmoud Darwish o Mahmoud Darwich, fue considerado el poeta nacional palestino y uno de los más célebres literatos árabes contemporáneos.
Darwish lived for many years in exile in Beirut and Paris. He is the author of over 30 books of poetry and eight books of prose, and earned the Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize from the Lannan Foundation, the Lenin Peace Prize, and the Knight of Arts and Belles Lettres Medal from France.In the 1960s Darwish was imprisoned for reciting poetry and traveling between villages without a permit.

A pesar de que Darwish rápidamente se enamoró de Ben-Ami, ambos mantuvieron su relación en secreto, si bien se escribían y se veían con regularidad.

Born in Palestine prior to the establishment of the State of Israel, he spent much of his life in exile before returning in 1996. His poetry was original in its poetic imagery and also borrowed from classical literature.
Biografía de Mahmud Darwish Con seis años, huyó con su familia de su ciudad natal, por la invasión de las tropas de Israel, viviendo en varias localidades cercanas. Tras su educación secundaria, marchó a Haifa, en donde trabajó como periodista y se unió al Partido Comunista de Israel, mientras trabajaba para el periódico Al-Ittihad, lo que le valió prisión y arrestos domiciliarios.
