As a child, he was sent away to France for his own safety and to keep him away from Robert Stewart of Albany. His ship was intercepted and he spent the next 18 years in English captivity. His uncle Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and Robert’s son, Murdoch Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany, did nothing to free King James.
