Die historische Innenstadt von Bayreuth darf nicht mit dem weit außerhalb des Zentrums gelegenen Stadtteil Altstadt (bis ins 19. Jahrhundert Altenstadt) verwechselt werden. Aus diesem Grund wäre die Bezeichnung Altstadt für den Stadtkern irreführend und ist daher nicht gebräuchlich.
