  6. William Frederick was born in Ansbach in 1686 to John Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, and his father's second wife; Eleonore Erdmuthe of Saxe-Eisenach. His two surviving half-brothers, Margraves Christian Albert and George Frederick II , both died unmarried and without legitimate issue.

  7. He was the third son of John Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach by his first wife Joanna Elisabeth of Baden-Durlach. George Frederick succeeded his elder brother Christian Albert as Margrave in 1692. In the War of the Palatinian Succession he fought from 1695 to 1697 as a volunteer in the Imperial Army.
