Ireland ( Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə] ( listen)) is a European country on the island of Ireland. It shares a border with Northern Ireland (which is controlled by the United Kingdom ). The country is sometimes called the Republic of Ireland to distinguish it from the island. It is a member of the European Union. The republic's capital is Dublin.
Most significantly, the Sunningdale Agreement brought together political leaders from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the UK to deliberate for the first time since 1925. The Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention and Jim Prior's 1982 assembly were also temporarily implemented; however all failed to either reach consensus or operate in the longer term.
