18 de sept. de 2023 · Spelling alphabet (2022 version) [ edit] According to DIN 5009 (2022 version), which is valid for Germany, the following German names and words are assigned to letters of the alphabet for clearer enunciation on the telephone. A – Aachen. Ä – Umlaut Aachen. B – Berlin. C – Chemnitz.
In German orthography, the letter ß, called Eszett ( IPA: [ɛsˈtsɛt]) or scharfes S ( IPA: [ˌʃaʁfəs ˈʔɛs], "sharp S"), represents the / s / phoneme in Standard German when following long vowels and diphthongs. The letter-name Eszett combines the names of the letters of s ( Es) and z ( Zett) in German.
It was devised by the International Phonetic Association in the late 19th century as a standardized representation of speech sounds in written form. [1] The IPA is used by lexicographers, foreign language students and teachers, linguists, speech–language pathologists, singers, actors, constructed language creators, and translators.

The alphabet. The German alphabet is very similar to that of English but it has four letters that English does not have: ä, ö, ü and ß. In English, to make the pronunciation and spelling of a word clear, we say "B as in burger" but in German they use names to spell and those names are fixed. Do not confuse ß (Eszett) with β (beta).
