Marlborough House is a Grade I listed mansion that was built for Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744) whose close friendship with Queen Anne was the story of the 2018 film The Favourite.
Marlborough House was designed by Wren, with later work by Sir William Chambers (1771), with further alterations by Pennethorne in the 1860s. The House still contains some of Wren's original decorations, including military wall paintings by Laguerre and the Gentileschi ceiling removed from the Queen's House in Greenwich and reset in Marlborough House.
The royal couple had their second son in the Marlborough house in 1865. Later they moved to Buckingham Palace following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. Queen Alexandra came home to Marlborough house after the death of her husband. Following suit, Queen Mary, the widow of Queen Alexandra’s son made Marlborough House her residence in 1936.
