22 de oct. de 2023 · The property where Braemar Castle stands today used to belong to the Earls of Mar from the Middle Ages. It was John Erskine (an Earl of Mar) who had the fortress constructed in 1628. Initially, its purpose was to be a hunting lodge, as well as provide a landmark of counterbalance against the powerful Farquharsons.

21 de mar. de 2021 · Braemar Castle played a prominent role in the Jacobite rebellions. John Farquharson had set fire to it during the uprising in 1689 so that English troops could not use it. Jacobites failed again in 1715 and as a result the Castle was confiscated and John Farquharson, the 9th Laird of Invercauld acquired it.
