She was born the Hon Anne Spencer, 4 Aug, 1920, daughter of Albert Edward John Spencer, then styled Viscount Althorp [1892-1975], by his wife the former Lady Cynthia Elinor Beatrix Hamilton [1897-1972], OBE, DCVO, scion of the Dukes of Abercorn.
