Havilland, Sir Geoffrey de (1882–1965), aircraft and aero-engine designer and manufacturer, was born at Magdala House, Terriers Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, on 27 July 1882, second of three sons of the Revd Charles de Havilland (1854–1920) and his first wife, Alice Jeannette (1854–1911), daughter of Jason Saunders, of Medley Manor, Oxfordshire.

He received the Air Force Cross in 1919, in recognition of his service in the First World War, and was knighted in 1944. Geoffrey de Havilland died aged 82, of a cerebral haemorrhage, on 21 May 1965.

The man who created the Tiger Moth, the Mosquito and the Comet taught himself to fly and started building his first airplane in 1908. He took off in it for the first and only time the following year after many hours vainly taxiing it around.

  6. A statue of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland was unveiled by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, at the Hatfield Campus of the University of Hertfordshire on 30 July 1997. A fleet of 43 de Havilland-related aeroplanes flew over in salute, thought to be the biggest flypast of civil aircraft held in the country since before the Second World War.
