On the morning of 27 August 1979, Lord Louis Mountbatten was fishing on his boat, Shadow V, off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland, near his family holiday home at Classiebawn Castle. The IRA detonated a bomb which had been planted on the boat, killing the 79-year-old cousin of the Queen instantly.
