Kronstadt (în rusă Кронштадт; din germană Krone — "coroană" și Stadt — "oraș") este un oraș-port din Rusia, situat pe Insula Kotlin și insulele mai mici adiacente din Golful Finlandei, la 30 km vest de Sankt Petersburg. Kronstadt este și unica localitate din raionul Kronstadt, al orașului federal Sankt Petersburg .
Naval Cathedral. Kronstadt was founded by Emperor Peter the Great in 1704 as a maritime fortress and naval base on Kotlin Island. The name "Kronstadt" was invented by Peter the Great, and in German means "Crown City". The port is ice-bound for 140–160 days in the year, from the beginning of December to April.
Construction of the fortness began in 1703, when Prince Menshikov set up a fort on the sandback of the south coast from a model, made by Peter himself. On 7 May 1704 the first fortifications, including two batteries, were constructed. This day is regarded as the date of Kronstadt founding.

The fortress was founded by Peter the Great, who took the island of Kotlin from the Swedes in 1703. Pushkin's great-grandfather, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, oversaw its construction. The first fortifications were inaugurated on 18 May 1704. These fortifications, known as Kronstadt's Forts, were constructed very quickly.
