History and description. Stadio Via Del Mare opened on the 11th of September 1966 with a friendly between Lecce and Spartak Moscow. The stadium replaced Lecce’s old Stadio Carlo Pranzo. Stadio Via Del Mare could initially only hold 16,000 spectators and had a rectangular shape. Its capacity was increased in 1976 with a further 4,500 places.
