[John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, revised 2014] Cranach depicts Albrecht von Brandenburg in cardinal's vestments in the role of St Jerome in a comfortable study with a coffered ceiling that is lit from the right by a crown glass window. The cardinal is seated at a large desk with writing implements, books and a crucifix.

The Rothschild Prayerbook was probably aquired at the same time as this manuscript.

  5. ‘The cardinal’s features are obviously aged and suggest that the portrait was executed after 1529. Cranach, his workshop and his circle generally employed – presumably with the assistance of a stencil – a prototype from about 1525 for the numerous portraits of Albrecht, which depicted the characteristic physiognomy with the large face, the small surly mouth, the eye bags and the long nose.

  6. Albrecht of Brandenburg, the highest-ranking ecclesiastical dignitary of the empire, was a supporter of the sale of indulgences and one of Martin Luther’s most powerful adversaries. In 1519, a year after he was appointed cardinal, he commissioned Dürer to engrave his portrait (The Small Cardinal).
