The church was originally a private chapel and was built by Sir Edward Rodes, the High Sheriff of Yorkshire who stood out conspicuously as a Parliamentarian, on the commencement of the civil wars, even though his brother-in-law was Lord Strafford and a Royalist.

The church of ALL SAINTS is a small building consisting of chancel 23 ft. 6 in. by 15 ft. 9 in. and aisleless nave 44 ft. 6 in. by 19 ft. 1½ in., with south porch and western bellcote. The walls of the present building are substantially of early 12th-century date and the church has never been enlarged.
