The second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , Edward, nicknamed "Bertie", was related to royalty throughout Europe.

He was an excellent student and athlete who enjoyed hunting and dancing. When he became king at age 18, great things were expected of him.
