He was the last ruling duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , a state of the German Empire , from 30 July 1900 to 14 November 1918.

The present King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is thus Gustav IV's heir through his grandfather, Gustav VI Adolf.

In 976 his successor, Leopold I of the house of Babenberg, was installed in office. Under Leopold’s rule the eastern frontier was extended to the Vienna Woods after a war with the Magyars.
