Hace 4 días · Four main reports show the state of education in the city before 1890: in 1819, there were 9 day schools and 8 Sunday schools in the parishes of St. Martin, St. Thomas and St. Edmund. In 1835, there were an infant school, 15 day schools, 8 Sunday schools and 6 boarding schools.

They and a few dame schools provided education for the poor and there were several middle-class private schools. (fn. 9) By 1833 Churchmen had opened a day school for girls and three for infants.
