Hace 3 días · Our Science. 24 May 2024. This morning (Friday 24 May) at 08:20 am, a minor volcanic eruption occurred at Whakaari/White Island. Through a Whakatāne based camera we observed a steam and gas plume rising over 2km above this island, this has now reverted to more normal levels.

Images from GNS Science monitoring cameras near Whakatane show ash rising above the volcanic island at around 8.30am on Friday morning. White Island was currently at Volcanic Alert Level 2, indicating moderate to heightened volcanic unrest.

Hace 3 días · A minor volcanic eruption occurred this morning at Whakaari/White Island which was observed as a vigorous steam plume above the island at 8:20 am NZST. As we have no sensors on the island we are relying on webcams and satellite imagery to assess the situation.
