Hace 4 días · The traces of an ancient fortress, on a promontory called the Giant's-Castle, are supposed to be of remote origin. On the west side of the island are St. Mary's garrison, with the barracks, and several batteries, and Star-Castle; the latter was built by Sir Francis Godolphin, in 1593.
Hace 1 día · An early governor of Scilly was Thomas Godolphin, whose son Francis received a lease on the Isles in 1568. The Godolphins and their Osborne relatives held this position until 1831, when George Osbourne, 6th Duke of Leeds surrendered the lease to the islands, with them then returning to direct rule from the Duchy of Cornwall .
Hace 2 días · Their son Francis Godolphin died without issue, and his heir and cousin by marriage, Lord Francis Godolphin Osborne, was afterwards lord of the manor. (fn. 44) His son became eighth Duke of Leeds, and the present duke now owns this estate.

The latter in 1859 succeeded his cousin as eighth Duke of Leeds, and the manorial rights are now vested in his grandson George Godolphin Osborne, tenth Duke of Leeds.
