Hace 4 días · In 1920 the conductor Arturo Toscanini led a council that raised money to reopen it, organizing it as an autonomous corporation. Bombed during World War II , the theatre reopened in 1946, partly through funds raised by benefit concerts given by Toscanini.

Hace 1 día · In Understanding Toscanini (1987), I wrote: “In his landmark 1960 essay ‘Masscult and Midcult,’ Dwight Macdonald, stigmatizing both, wrote of midcult that it has ‘the essential qualities of masscult [but] decently covers them with a cultural figleaf,’ and that it ‘pretends to respect the standards of high culture while in fact it waters them down and vulgarizes them.’ . . .
Hace 4 días · A terrific performance. Walter was dissatisfied with the last movement of the 1949 recording and convinced Columbia to allow him to re-record it. This movement has noticeably better sound quality. Columbia Symphony/Bruno Walter (1959) (Columbia now Sony Classics). Overall, I prefer the earlier mono recording.
Of the New York premiere of the Rhapsody by the New York Philharmonic under Bruno Walter with Rachmaninoff at the keyboard, Robert A. Simon wrote in The New Yorker: “The Rachmaninoff variations, written with all the composer’s skill, turned out to be the most successful novelty that the Philharmonic Symphony has had since Mr. Toscanini overwhelmed the subscribers with Ravel’s Bolero.”

Turandot, basada en un cuento fantástico chino de Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806), es un drama lírico en tres actos que nos relata cómo los habitantes de un Pekín legendario viven bajo el terror de esta princesa. Ella rebosa crueldad a la par que belleza, y parece que solo el matrimonio podría acabar con su tiranía.

In four movements, athletic and colorfully knotty, this symphony borrows deliberate “exotic” elements from Richard Strauss, perhaps cross-fertilized by the French school that includes Roussel and D’Indy.
