  5. Hace 2 días · In 1879 William Burges designed a pair of garden studios behind no. 28 Beaufort Street for Louise and Joe Jopling, both painters. After Joe died suddenly in 1884 Louise let one studio to Maria Zambaco, sculptress; the studios were later converted into a Roman Catholic chapel.

In 1882, the museum was involved in the establishment of the independent Egypt Exploration Fund (now Society) the first British body to carry out research in Egypt. A bequest from Miss Emma Turner in 1892 financed excavations in Cyprus.

The galleries and pews were removed, the two 14th-century windows in the north aisle were reconstructed and the plaster ceilings replaced by oak boards in the style of those in Peterborough Cathedral.
