The position of the University was strengthened by the grant in 1604 of the right to return members to Parliament, (fn. 1) and in 1605 by a new royal charter.

In August 1648 a joint force of Scots and English Royalists was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s army at Preston – many Scots fugitives were held captive at Chapel en le Frith.
