Much legendary lore has been accumulated on the subject, especially in the course of the disputes in the 16th and 17th centuries, as to the relative seniority of Cambridge and of Oxford.

The position of the University was strengthened by the grant in 1604 of the right to return members to Parliament, (fn. 1) and in 1605 by a new royal charter.
