In 1604 Durston was said to be held of James Clarke as of his manor of Cheddon Fitzpaine, a manor also formerly held by the families of FitzPayn and Percy.

He was much favoured by Charles I., who was most anxious to secure his support, and who, as the king himself afterwards declared, "courted him as his mistress."
