The Taft family was not wealthy, living in a modest home in the suburb of Mount Auburn. Alphonso served as a judge and an ambassador, and was U.S. Secretary of War and Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant.

The Republican vote was split between Taft, the party's official candidate, and Roosevelt, running under the label of the Progressive Party.
