The period may be divided into four phases, the first ending in 1560 with the creation of Ambrose Dudley as Earl of Warwick in 1561.

Ambrose Dudley's monument is mainly of alabaster; the tomb-chest has three panels on each side and one at each end, all with elaborate shields.

(fn. 76) These same mills were in 1609 granted by the king to Edward Ferrers and Francis Philipps.
