(fn. 140) The most famous occupant of this house was Lord Drumlanrig, afterwards 2nd Duke of Queensberry, who was there in 1690–3.

The Duke of York obtained a verdict for £50,000 damages against him in 1682 for scandalum magnatum, and in default of payment he was imprisoned till 1686.
