There appears to be no record as to the means whereby the manor of Burton came into the possession of Roger de Burton, younger son of Roger de Aston of Ashton under Lyne, co. Lancaster. Some indication may be derived from the arms of Burton, which differ entirely from those of Assheton; they were Argent, a chief indented azure.
