Hace 3 días · Sir Cloudesley Shovel's body was found by a fisherman, on the shore at Porthellic, and by him buried in the sands; but was afterwards removed to Westminster Abbey. The Colossus, of 74 guns, Captain Murray, was lost on a ledge of rocks to the south-west of St. Sampson's island, in the month of December, 1798.
Hace 2 días · Porthellick Cove has a memorial to mark the site where Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell's body (1650-1707) was washed ashore following the Scilly naval disaster in 1707. This was one of the worst maritime disasters in the history of Britain, when 4 ships (Association, Eagle, Firebrand and Romney) with around 2,000 sailors were lost.

Hace 4 días · Sir Cloudesley Shovell was born well after the Civil War, and was an admiral who perished in the Scilly Isles when his fleet ran aground in a violent storm. Robert Blake's correct naval rank was General at Sea.
Hace 3 días · In 1841 the area between Liverpool and Thornhill roads was filling rapidly but the rest of Barnsbury was largely empty. Cloudesley Square and its adjoining streets were almost filled, as were Barnsbury Park and neighbouring streets on the Barnfield estate.
