His sister Isabella, Countess of Buchan, came to crown Bruce in his stead although her husband had allied himself with the English.

The Swiss soldiers used a flute and a drum to signal precise movements to a tight annd mobile formation of soldiers armed with pikes, halberds, swords, crossbows, and firearms.

The marriage produced four children: Matilda, who married a squire named Thomas Isaac; Margaret, who married William earl of Sutherland c.1342; David II, who succeeded his father as king in 1329; John, who died in childhood.
