Hace 4 días · Also living there then was Sir Edward Stanley, possibly the third son of the earl of Derby (d. 1572); although he is thought to have been knighted only in 1586, he is alleged to have succeeded Sir Thomas at Eynsham and to have died there in 1609, but the evidence is conflicting.
Hace 3 días · After the title of Earl of Derby had been taken from the Ferrars family, it was given, with that of Lancaster, to several of the blood-royal of the Plantagenets. Melbourne Castle was one of the seats of Edmund, Earl of Lancaster. King Henry VII. conferred the title of Earl of Derby on the Stanley family, in whom it has ever since continued.

Although his term as Governor General ended in September 1893, he was forced to return to England on July 15. In April of that year, his older brother Edward Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby died, and Stanley succeeded him as the 16th Earl of Derby.
