I believe Wallis never loved him, but she definitely wanted to be queen. Especially after David became king. She mistakenly believed that because he was king, he could do as he pleased. She wanted him to marry her and then be crowned beside him at his coronation like he promised - critics be damned. Wallis exploited his dependence on her.
