[1] The Ascanians are named after Ascania (or Ascaria) Castle, known as Schloss Askanien in German, which was located near and named after Aschersleben.

All of these dukes were descendants of Albert I of Saxony who had split his lands between his sons, one getting Wittenberg and the other Lauenburg.
