After the death of his uncle Ernst in 1941, Georg succeeded to the headship of the House of Saxe-Meiningen and assumed the title of Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and style Georg III. Prince Georg died in the Russian prisoner of war camp near Cherepovets in Northern Russia, in 1946.

Karl Alexander became Grand Duke upon his father’s death in 1853. He was a supporter of the arts and developed numerous friendships with some of the greatest writers, poets, and musicians of the day. These included Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, Fanny Lewald, and Hans Christian Andersen.
