The Godolphins and their Osborne relatives held this position until 1831, when George Osbourne, 6th Duke of Leeds surrendered the lease to the islands, with them then returning to direct rule from the Duchy of Cornwall .

Hace 3 días · In 1832 Francis Godolphin Osborne was created Lord Godolphin of Farnham Royal, a title which passed with the property on his death in 1850 to his son George. The latter in 1859 succeeded his cousin as eighth Duke of Leeds, and the manorial rights are now vested in his grandson George Godolphin Osborne, tenth Duke of Leeds.

Hace 6 días · Star Castle was constructed in 1593 by Robert Adams (1540–1595, mapmaker, Surveyor of Royal Works) under the directions of Francis Godolphin, following the 1588 Spanish Armada. In May 1593, fearing another Spanish invasion, Queen Elizabeth I ordered a fort and a pair of sconces to be built as a lookout for intruder vessels.
