Hace 2 días · At a 1778 social gathering including Sir Charles Bunbury and Edward Stanley, the 12th earl of Derby, the group conceived the idea of a race on the Downs for three-year-old fillies, which was subsequently called “the Oaks” after the name of Derby’s nearby estate.

Salop, several of whose family settled in Shrewsbury. Richard and Thomas Owen were the sons of Robert Owen of Shrewsbury, and Susanna, daughter of Lancelot Bathurst, alderman of London.

The nephew of the latter bequeathed it, in 1788, to Daniel Thomas Hill, Esq. It is now the property and re sidence of the Reverend Thomas Hill.
