Hace 5 días · In 1823 the marquess settled the manor for life on his son George Granville, Earl Gower (2nd duke 1833). After the 2nd duke's death in 1861 the manor continued to descend with the dukedom. Most of the manorial estate, except in Donnington Wood, was sold by the 5th duke (d. 1963) in separate lots in 1914 and 1917.
Hace 5 días · By then the estate had been broken up: some land was sold separately in 1819 and more was bought by Richard Grosvenor, 2nd marquess of Westminster, in 1850. The survey of 1650 listed property in Chester itself, in the town fields of Handbridge and Claverton, and in Eccleston.
Hace 5 días · Sir George Chudleigh, who married one of the coheiresses of Sir William Davie, Bart., of Creedy, died in 1738, leaving three daughters co-heiresses, married to Oxendon, Chichester, and Prideaux. The title and the male line of this ancient family became extinct by the death of Sir James Chudleigh, the sixth baronet, who was killed at the siege of Ostend, in 1745.
