Hace 3 días · The story of Boughton House begins in the late 1600s, when Ralph Montagu, the 1st Duke of Montagu, returned from his tenure as the English ambassador to France. Inspired by the opulence and grandeur of French palace architecture, particularly that of Versailles, the duke set out to create his own masterpiece in the English countryside.

Hace 4 días · The earl (George, 4th Earl) became in 1766 Duke of Montagu of a new creation. He died at Montagu House in 1790, also leaving no son behind him, and the house passed into the possession of his daughter Elizabeth, who had married Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch.

Their two older daughters were already married: Henrietta to Godolphin's son Francis in April 1698, and Anne to the hot-headed and intemperate Charles Spencer, Earl of Sunderland in 1700.
