In Hannover you really don't need a Mountainbike, if you do not want to ride it in nature. I would suggest ~8 gears, so you could easily climb the few slopes in Hannover, like the bridges over the Messeschnellweg (City-Autobahn if you want so). With 3 gears it could be a bit hard to do so.
