The late George Hardinge, Esq., one of his Majesty's Justices for South Wales, was the representative of this family; now his next brother, the Reverend Henry Hardinge, rector of Stanhope, father of the brave Captain George Hardinge, of the navy, for whom a public monument has been voted.

The Museum was originally housed in Gracie Mansion, the future residence of the Mayor of New York. Hardinge Scholle succeeded Henry Brown in 1926 and began planning a new home for the Museum.
