Hace 1 día · Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton, had became Chancellor in 1612 on Cecil's death. One party among the regents had wished to elect Charles, Duke of York, who was nominated without the king's consent. This aroused royal displeasure and made Northampton unwilling to stand, but eventually he agreed to accept office.

Holding, the restorers of Castle Ashby. The public library was housed here with the museum, until 1883; the borough records are now preserved here.

Hace 5 días · It may well be possible, however, to identify one of the key thinkers involved in developing these new ideas, and that is the king’s companion-in-arms, William de Bohun, earl of Northampton. Northampton was present at virtually all of the key engagements of the period – those in Scotland in the 1330s, in Brittany in the 1340s and finally at the battle of Crécy itself in 1346.

(1) Although the last senior appointment of a layman in the Church of England was that of Sir Adam Newton as dean of Durham on 16 September 1605 (he resigned 25 April 1620) laymen continued to serve in households as lay chaplains.
