Henry Lascelles era hijo de la princesa María y por tanto nieto del rey Jorge V, también sobrino del anterior Gran Maestre. Entre 1947 y 1967, los Grandes Maestres fueron el Duque de Devonshire y el Conde de Scarbrough. No eran miembros de la familia real.

(fn. 21) On Sir Richard Cholmley's death without male issue in 1521 (fn. 22) the manor reverted to the Crown and was granted in 1522 to Sir Henry Wyatt, kt., and his issue male.
