Mary Stuart, Mary Queen of Scots (1542-87) and James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell (1536-78) visited the castle in 1563 during a progress. Perhaps they liked it - or thought it a safe fortress - as it was in Borthwick castle that Mary and her new husband Bothwell sought refuge in 1567.
