Upon his return to England, James prompted an immediate controversy by announcing his engagement to Anne Hyde , the daughter of Charles's chief minister, Edward Hyde .

He escaped by getting his guards drunk, and then lowering himself from a window on a rope. The duke fled to France, then England, where he allied himself with King Edward IV.
