As prime minister (1762–63), he negotiated the peace ending the Seven Years’ War (1756–63) with France, but he failed to create a stable.

When he was 10 years old he inherited the estates of his maternal grandfather, Lord Dumfries, and at the age of 21, succeeded his paternal grandfather as the 2 nd Marquess of Bute. The estates he inherited came with a list of titles as long as your arm.
