In December 1717 Bach exchanged his position as court organist and concertmaster in Weimar for that of capellmeister to Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen. Leopold’s court was Calvinist, and as a result Bach was no longer responsible for Lutheran service music—either organ or vocal.
