The death of his estranged wife Joan in England in 1362 allowed him to marry Margaret Drummond, widow of Sir John Logie, in 1363. He divorced Margaret in 1369 and was planning a marriage to Agnes Dunbar, the sister of the earl of March, when he died on 22 February 1371 at Edinburgh Castle.
