Charles II was the eldest surviving child of Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and Henrietta Maria of France.

Nell Gwyn's old house, which stood just south of it, was also bought, and converted in 1779 into the 'Queen's Lower Lodge' for the reception of the four younger princesses.
